Jagannath University is one of the pioneer institutions in the education sector of Bangladesh Government. Jagannath College (presently Jagannath University ) was first established on 4th July 1884 in the name of Sri Jagannath Roy Chowdhury by his son Sri Kishoree Lal Roy Chowdhury, the Zamindar of Baliati, Saturia, Manikgonj.
Till 1951, Jagannath College was one of the two Colleges where Bengali was taught as an additional subject. Since then, the activities of the Bengali Department was limited to teaching compulsory Bengali at Higher Secondary and Degree levels and as an additional subject, Between 1972-73 the College opened Honors and Master's courses.
The college was declared as a govrenment institution on 1st August, 1968. At that time Professor Ajit Kumar Guh, the eminent educationist and cultural personality was the Head of this Department. He resigned from this college after it was declared a Govt. college. The Department was teaching in two shifts -Day and Night. The college stopped teaching H.S.C and Degree courses since 1982 and 1992 respectively. Since then the Department has been conducting the Honors and Master's Courses. Day and Night shifts were merged on 20th October 2005 when Jagannath College was transformed as Jagannath University.
