Guidelines
Human research ethics committee (HREC)
HREC is an independent research-based entity monitored by the department of Psychology, Jagannath University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The committee was established in 2021 upon the agreement of the academic committee of the Department of Psychology, Jagannath University, Dhaka. The committee consists of 3 senior faculties (preferably professors) of the Department of Psychology, Jagannath University. The committee will be formed for 3 years tenure. The academic committee of the department of Psychology, Jagannath University, Dhaka, should approve the new committee. The committee will hold the right to alter the guidelines for the ethics committee with reasonable conditions and should inform about the changes to the academic committee of the Department of Psychology, Jagannath University, Dhaka.
Responsibilities of HREC
- Review human-based research proposals and give feedback and advice, on the ethical standards of research design, methods, and implications of the study for the betterment of academia and the country.
- The committee will review all kinds of psychological research conducted for academic and non-academic purposes.
- The committee will review religious, cultural or social sensitivity of the submitted proposal.
- The committee will monitor and query, if needed, the progress of the approved project.
- This committee has full rights to disapprove and withdraw approval of the research project under reasonable circumstances.
- The ethics committee has the right to monitor and audit the approved project at any time.
- The committee will keep a record of the projects applied for approval, approved and disapproved projects.
- The committee will address any justified query about the approved/disapproved project from the authority/government/journals.
Objectives of the ethical approval
- To secure the rights, dignitiy, safety, physical and psychological wellbeing of the research participants
- To protect the rights, safety, and physical and psychological well-being of the research team.
- To minimize potential threats that may arise due to negligence of the researchers and/or organization.
- To guide the researchers in developing an ethically comprehensive research design.
- To provide evidence of ethical approval in refereed journals
Research requires ethical approval if it involves
- Human participants
- Any primary research
- Accessing personnel and confidential data
Who can apply for the ethical approval
- Any academic and non-academic research institutions
- National and international research organizations
How to apply
- The primary investigator will submit the proposal with required documents in the HREC approved format.
- The applicant should pay fees while submitting the proposal
- The review would take up to 1 month to approve
- The committee will contact the applicant with queries once the review is done.
- The applicant should respond to the queries within the given time.
- The proposal would get approval upon a satisfactory response from the applicant.
- The committee would come up with queries multiple times and the applicant should respond accordingly.
- Any amendments to the approved project should be notified to the committee and amended approval will require additional fees.
- The approved project will get a registration number that should be mentioned during dissemination and publication.

The following fees should be paid. Noted that the fees would be changed upon the decision of the HREC.

Cost distribution
- 20% of the given fees will be deposited to the fund of the Department of Psychology, Jagannath University, Dhaka.
- 80% of the fees will be spent on the rumination of the review committee members.

This form should be clearly completed in the typed script by the candidate/Principal Investigator(s) seeking ethical approval for the research project involving human participants. For academic purposes, the research proposal should be approved by the respected supervisor(s) before submitting it to the ethical review committee.
Applicant should not commence the research activities (such as data collection, focus group discussion and judge evaluation) without ethical clearance. The application will not be considered for ethical clearance if any research activities have proceeded before being applied for ethical approval. Nonetheless, the approved research should not be continued after the approval expires.
Please note that an incomplete application will not be considered for review. The required documents should be mentioned clearly at the respected place and appended to the application. The application should be revised or amended if any query arises and resubmitted to the review committee. Therefore, the applicant should keep sufficient time before applying since the process would take several weeks to complete.
